Trying to find and create a community within a school that you aren’t at all day can be tough. When the kids come into my after school care I always try to make it a safe space where they feel connected to me, other students, or any other staff.
I think a lot of times children can kind of be forgotten about after school because they’re not the teacher's responsibility anymore and the school doesn’t know what to do with them so that’s where I come in. I love to hear about the children’s days and what happened. I think those conversations and showing the kids that I care goes a long way to creating real relationships with them and contributing to the sense of community in the after school program.
I know I don’t spend a lot of time with them when you look at their whole school day but I don’t think that means the community i’m trying to build isn’t important. I think the best way to build and find a community is to look for and implement what you loved as a child and find what you wished you had
